Electronic Theatre Special Report: E3 2005: GameCube:

Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix

 Electonic Theatre Image

Finally, Konami have made a Dance game for the GameCube - with a classic Nintendo twist of course. Dance, Dance Revolution: Mario Mix is pretty similar to Konami’s other dancing games. For those not familiar with the Dance Revolution franchise there are four pads on a dance mat; forwards, backwards, left and right. You have to press these in the order they appear when they reach the marker, in time to the music. If you miss them it knocks down your beat meter, if that reaches zero its game over.

For this version there are several different Mario characters you can choose from, (Mario, Luigi, Toad, Waluigi, Wario and Bowser) dancing around the screen with you, which can be changed at the touch of a button to add a bit of variety, rather than a silhouetted non-descript person players have become accustomed to. This works as a double edged sword as watching shake Luigi shake his thang is so funny it proves quite distracting.

It has five different difficulty settings for you to choose from; easy, normal, hard, very hard and super hard as well as the now well established work out mode - aimed at burning calories. Electronic Theatre Image It wasn’t playable at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) so its unsure whether it includes features such as a calorie counter but any game which exercises more than your thumbs has got to be better then none at least.

One disappointment experienced on the E3 Demo was that all the songs available to play were Nintendo themed songs; although it has been confirmed there will be over 25 songs, some of which will be familiar, which can be unlocked as you progress through the game.

This game isn’t anything revolutionary; it’s basically - as the name suggests - a dancing game with Mario in it. But it is the only dancing game with a confirmed European release date available for the GameCube, so really, it’s better than nothing!
