Advance Wars was the first taste European gamers have
had of Nintendo’s Wars series and, being as popular as it
was, has cemented the title is history. So, contradictory to the
pattern and unveiling DS Wars, Nintendo revealed a playable
version of Advance Wars: Dual Strike at this year’s Electronic
Entertainment Expo (E3). Who says the gaming public aren’t
fickle?
Having only got the chance to play the opening few missions,
many of the new features and units in the title have been kept
behind closed doors. What was apparent from the playable build was
the scale of the title. Now being hugely expanded, Advance Wars:
Dual Strike takes things one stage further by allowing full
control of the action with merely a few strokes of the stylus.
Moving, shooting, checking stats and claiming territory can all be
performed with a couple of taps and all the details of the unit you
are currently in control of are displayed on the top screen.
The basic Advance Wars rules remain intact –
keeping the title as simple as it should be whilst increasing the
scope of play dramatically. The game is much quicker than in
predecessors and the level design has obviously been a much bigger
element in the production of the title. Basic tweaks have been made
to the units we’re all familiar with; such as the infantry being
infinitely weaker against heavy artillery – whilst we can expect
some stunning new developments to showcase the NintendoDS’s
features. Advance Wars: Dual Strike is certainly a game to watch out
for, not only enough to please both fans and newcomers, but
possibly one the best NintendoDS games at the show.
