Electronic Theatre Special Report: E3 2005: NintendoDS:

Mario Kart DS

Electronic Theatre ImageMario KartDS is one game many people were waiting for on the NintendoDS, including myself. The main thing they were pointing out on the booth was the fact it was running over the internet. Three of the players were in the room and one more somewhere… apparently New York , something I didn’t realise until long after I finished playing!

Seeing as it was running over the net it was handling at a fair pace, I’m thinking even though I didn’t get a chance to play the one player that it would be even quicker, but this is just an educated guess. The controls are very responsive although it did take a bit of getting used to using the D-pad to the power-slide (even though there have only been two games using the analogue stick).

I do attest that the character I was playing was slower than the others, I was playing as Toad and Donkey Kong overtook me so many times Electronic Theatre Image I can only assume he had a higher top speed than me (it’s not that I’m crap or anything!) but this is something we expect from Mario Kart; for some Karts to be better than the others. We couldn’t choose which character we played with, which annoyed me but with a demonstration version you can’t always have the pick of the bunch.

As said earlier we were playing four players but I wouldn’t be surprised if you could play with 8 players when Nintendo’s internet Wi-Fi thing-a-me-bobble goes live in November. Electronic Theatre Image I would also assume you would be able to play multiplayer through the DS download option.

I don’t know how to conclude this article, let’s be honest, everyone loves Mario Kart and I don’t think it could be a disappointment. I was a little dismayed that it didn’t use the Touch Screen; I would have thought such a prolific first party title would have used the exclusivity of the NintendoDS’s features to some pretty good effect, but still, things could be changed for the final game. It doesn’t really need it though; it’s a title that stands up in its own right as being a great game.
