Electronic Theatre Special Report: E3 2005: Xbox360: Full Auto

Electronic Theatre Image           Full Auto was the second of the two car-based Xbox360 titles playable at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and was, at least in the opinions of the Electronic staff in attendance, clearly the more original of the two games. Marking a further expedition from SEGA into more western-orientated titles, Full Auto presents itself as a cross between the break-neck racing of BurnOut and the brutal destruction from the Vigilante8 series.

The objective of the game is simply to be first to cross the finish line. However, this simplicity is contrasted by the ability to destroy pretty much everything in-sight, including your rivals. Armed with a rather puny Machine Gun, other weaponry is collectable as you speed around the course. The environments themselves are every well constructed, Electronic Theatre Imagewith plenty of detail and totally destructive – which adds another level to the proceedings, as high-speed collisions with volatile areas such as Petrol Stations will not just cause a minor halt, but will obliterate everything in the surrounding area.

The collision detection and damage physics are very precise, if not flawless, and the graphics are stunning – featuring real-time lighting that will make current Xbox fanatics shiver with glee. However, at current, the title handles at a snails pace until with use your heavily limited boost ability and the handling certainly needs some work. A very promising title, but there is still a fair bit of work to be done.
