Metroid Prime: Hunters
has been atop many NintendoDS
owners wish lists for some time. Since Nintendo took the
commendable step of creating a demo of the title specifically for
launching with the system, fans of the series have been waiting
with baited breath and, until
Friday, 26th August 2005
, they thought that wait was nearly over. Late Friday evening,
Nintendo issued a press release stating that the title would miss
its intended October 2005 release date in
Europe
and would be pushed into early 2006.
Although the press release stated the usual garb about
giving developers the time they want to make the game everything
they want it to be, the real truth is altogether more exciting.
Nintendo have been heavily criticized within the last generation
for being the only company not offering any kind of solid
online-play field, and it seems that due to this, now that they
have decided on a basis from which to enter the online market,
Nintendo are trying to shoehorn online play into every major title
released for the NintendoDS – certainly not a bad thing in my
eyes, with the ease of NintendoDS connectivity.
The delay suffered by Metroid Prime: Hunters will
allow Retro Studios to develop software allowing the title to
operate online from national servers with matches suggested
to be allowing a maximum of eight players. Until now, it’s been a
constant denial that Metroid Prime: Hunters will benefit
from any kind of internet play other than the Wi-Fi LAN that’s
now a standard on the current generation of handhelds.
Details of the single-player are still rather sketchy,
however it is expected that, with the continuous revelation of
characters – a total of six so far - within the Multiplayer Mode
(beginning at E3
2005), there’ll be many new faces both to help and hinder
Samus Aran along her path.
