The Tokyo Games Show (TGS) is often respected to differing
degrees by the many different areas of the games industry. Having
always tried to credit the show with equal commitment to that of
the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in LA, all the writers that
are normally locked in the basement have been able to gather a
short breath of fresh air as the Electronic Articles editors
and layout designers have needed to catch the 10 minutes of sleep
allocated to them over the last few days.
This year, is seems crystal clear that, more than ever, the
eye-drops and copious amounts of coffee, the screaming at
colleagues and the irritating rants about it being cool, “but not
really that new…” have been well worth the effort. All
three of the big names in console development have taken this
opportunity to prove, once-and-for-all, that they are the
greatest force in videogames.
Even the habitually sceptical Nintendo made an unprecedented
move in establishing some authority, and actually revealed some
details of their next-gen system that might encourage people to buy
it. Whilst Microsoft took to the stage as if it were a presentation
to the whole world (which, with the speed of modern journalism, it
may as well be), SONY really just presented themselves as the new
landlord of all entertainment and left only one question
unanswered – what happens if you’re late with the rent?
In the usual Electronic Articles tradition, below
you’ll find all the key information from every exhibit, keynote
speech, developer discussion and chat we had in the alley behind
the hall which we never actually had… if you catch my drift…
