Although the GameCube had such unique peripherals
as the Game Boy Player and Donkey Kong Bongos, the Eye-Toy
was probably the only peripheral unique to the
PlayStation2.
Although games utilising it were few-and-far-between, many
Eye-Toy titles were fun and inventive, so it comes as no
surprise that the Eye-Toy has returned for the PlayStation3,
with a few upgrades.
Although not playable, possibly the best title to
showcase the new and improved Eye-Toy at this years E3 was
Eye Of Judgement, an interesting Turn-Based Strategy Card game.
Evidently taking a lot of inspiration from
Yu-Gi-Oh! and the like, Eye of Judgement takes place
on a 3x3 grid and players must battle using cards with Monsters and
Spells aligned with five elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Wood and
Machinery. The game is won when a player controls five-of-the-nine
spaces. In-line with other card-based games, each card’s statistics
together with its element are likely to determine your strategy and
collecting a large Deck is probably the best way to ensure success.
It doesn’t seem that extra-ordinary does it? But
that is where the Eye-Toy comes in. All cards in the games
are actual Eye Of Judgement playing cards. The game comes
with thirty cards and a mat that illustrates the 3x3 grid.
This is
filmed by the Eye-Toy and all that happens on the grid
appears on-screen. This is the clever part. When a card is placed on
the mat, the Eye-Toy automatically recognises the card and,
with a lot of special effects, the monster or spell erupts from the
card on-screen. The effects are suitably over-the-top and, in all
honesty, this may well be the most impressive thing that the
PlayStation3 displayed at this years show.
Despite the fact that only a few things are
on-screen at any time, Eye Of Judgement boasts some nice
graphical flair. Monsters are suitably impressive and fight each
other as each player attacks with good animation and spells rock the
screen with nice Lighting-Effects. Although the storyline and other
features were not on show, it’s a fairly safe bet that Eye Of
Judgement will be one of the better PlayStation3 games when it
is released. |
