One of the first
titles announced for the PlayStation3 has now arrived in playable
form. As formulaic and unappealing as a title such as Motorstorm
generally is, at this year’s E3 it was certainly one of the most
complete and rewarding PlayStation3 titles on show. The title is an
off-road extravaganza featuring bikes, 4x4’s, buggies, trucks and
cars making their way through dirt-tracks, cityscapes and a third
as-of-yet to be revealed terrain-type vying for first position.
Thirty-five
vehicles are promised in the final build and more than sixteen
Tracks. The softer terrain alters under the weight of your vehicles
and, on the singular Track playable at the show, made successive
Laps progressively more difficult as you slip-and-slide through the
fresh-wet mud. Heavier vehicles make deeper trenches but have little
difficulty in moving smaller vehicles off their path. The handling
is responsive and greatly differs depending on both your choice of
vehicle and the damage caused to the Track. Racers will have their
own wars independently of the player, often clearing the path for a
sprint from last up the rankings as a beast smashes every other
vehicle out of your way. The races where tight and the Collision
Detection is spot-on.
An interesting feature is the ability to provoke other
racers. Clicking the R3 Button makes your team-mate throw abuse at
the other racers, antagonising them into a full-on
war
with you and your vehicle. The title’s graphical presentation is of
a high-standard with sprawling ravines and 3D crowds all remaining
rather active and energetic. The usual sub-standard trail-marks
occur as the system gets confused as you run-over previously laid
tyre-tracks and the code isn’t quite sure as to which should become
the most dominant, but with the title all-but finished and more than
four months left to release, there’s plenty of time for niggles like
this to be rectified. At the PlayStation3’s Launch, you can predict
that Motorstorm will be one of the titles under the least
demand; however, much like the Xbox360’s Amped 3, this is
very likely to be unjustified |
