Ten
hours in the air, far too much Metroid Prime: Hunters and Football
Manager Handheld and some pretty ropey plane food but we actually
made it. The Electronic Articles boys are in Los Angeles ready for
the biggest gaming event of the year; E3. And what a year it is; the
first play of the new PlayStation and Nintendo’s interestingly named
Wii, a wealth of announcements for current consoles and more games
than you shake a TV-remote-shaped videogame controller at! So what’s
it all about?
After sampling some excellent fast food, buying
some incredibly cheap but ultimately pointless stuff and enforcing
our countries fine reputation for hooliganism, we popped out to
downtown LA on Monday morning to scope out the venue for this year’s
Extremely Exciting Extravaganza, and what we found was a Convention
Centre on the brink of exploding with gaming goodness. Every wall
seemed filled with advertisements for almost every software and
hardware developer and publisher under the sun with big guns SONY,
Microsoft and EA taking up much of the available space hyping their
latest and greatest releases.

Taking place on Monday 8th and Tuesday
9th May are press conferences from the big three. SONY
took the stage yesterday and announced a whole
range of juicy details about the PSP and, of course, the
PlayStation3, including its controller, its online service and
perhaps most importantly, its price, as well as unveiling a whole
load of games. This morning an enthusiastic Shigeru Miyamoto, Satoru
Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime told press of the new directions Nintendo
intends to take the gaming industry with the NintendoDS and Wii and
showed of their new Intellectual Properties, as well as displaying
new titles from current favourites. Last up was Microsoft and their
multiformat ideas alongside a trailer showing many upcoming titles
for their flagship system, the Xbox360. And, despite the hectic
schedule, they all still found the time to take shots at each other,
those crazy kids.
So, on to tomorrow and all the gaming joy it’s
sure to bring, as the Los Angeles Convention Centre opens its doors
for E3 2006. The show floor is sure to host thousands of games from
hundreds of developers and Electronic Articles is prepped and ready
to bring you everything you need to know straight from the event
itself. Is Unreal Tournament 2007 more impressive than Halo3? Are
Wii games anywhere near as amazing as they could be? And, perhaps
most importantly, how bad does next-gen SpongeBob SquarePants suck?
Watch this space people, it’s all going to get a little
whack. |
