E3 2006: Wii

Nintendo’s Wii appeared at E3 2006 in a playable form for the first time. Attracting the most attendees of any demonstration at this year’s show, its expansive self-contained unit Electronic Theatre Imageon Nintendo’s stand, much like the The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess stand from last year, saw queues all day long – often up to a reported four hour wait! However, through an immense amount of skill and display of authority, your beloved Electronic Articles once again managed to slip through with enough time on the clock to scale through all twenty-seven of the playable software titles.

Facing SONY’s paltry nine playable PlayStation3 titles and Microsoft’s onslaught of near-complete software, Nintendo managed to hold their own with impressive showings from both well-known franchises and new Intellectual Properties. The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Electronic Theatre ImagePrincess was obviously one of the most sought-after stands, with the likes of Red Steel, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, ExciteTruck, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Spongebob Squarepants: Creature From The Krusty Krab, Sonic Wild Fire, DragonBall Z: Budokai Tenkaichi II, Project H.A.M.M.E.R., Elebits, Super Mario Galaxy and, of course, the Wii Sports series providing more than enough support; and it doesn’t end there.

Although no release date or pricing strategy has been announced, the many clues Nintendo have given mean the puzzle is all-but pieced together. With SONY’s plans looking in pretty bad shape, Christmas 2006 looks likely to belong to the Wii. In-depth reports on all the Wii’s biggest titles are linked below for your reading pleasure, just be careful about exactly how much you want one…
