Electronic Theatre: Electronic Articles: Nintendo Announce Q1 Release Schedule

Alongside the continuous string on Nintendo Press Releases, we have received the updated Release Schedule for Q1, 2007 – for both NintendoDS and Wii. Many of you will be excited to hear that some fantastic titles are headed to towards Nintendo’s latest entrant into the home console market, however, they will also note a lack in terms of quantity. As has befallen Nintendo’s two previous home consoles – the Nintendo64 and GameCube – Wii is looking likely to have a slight draught of software in the initial months following launch. While the Xbox360 suffered the same fate, it managed to hold it’s head-high and break through the stormy waters into a very strong fourth quarter in 2006. However, retailer confidence on the whole is clearly not as strong for Wii as it was with the Xbox360, and whether this shortage is likely to have any lasting impact remains to be seen. The disappearance of the fantastic Super Mario Galaxy altogether from the line-up, given Nintendo’s history, comes as no great shock. However, Nintendo can’t rely on The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess forever, and so must prepare another big-hitter for launch in that all-important Easter window – Mario Party 8 just won’t cut-it.

For the NintendoDS, however, things are looking much rosier. A list of titles as long as your arm (many of which simply delayed from their original pre-Christmas launch) with fantastic names such as StarFox Command, Children Of Mana, Mario Slam Basketball and Pokemon Ranger spearheading the surge of software. While the NintendoDS is bound to have a very successful first-quarter in 2007, as with Wii, one title remains distinctively absent; The Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
