Electronic Theatre Special: Xbox360 Weekly Rundown

The internet is once again aflame with rumours of the Xbox360 redesign, currently referred to as the Zephyr. All point toward the same thing, a black Xbox360 with a 120Gb Hard Drive Electronic Theatre Imageand a HDMI port, likely with the newer 65nm manufactured processors. Although this has been doing the rounds for a while now, the frequency and quantity of these rumour has reached the point that they are sounding more-and-more likely every day. When questioned about the subject, Microsoft had this to say; “We have not made any official announcements regarding any such product at this time. Obviously, were we to announce something like this, it would have to be in a blowout press event, rather than by confirming a rumour.” Usually, Microsoft spokespersons would either go with a total “no comment” or a flat out denial, could this be a subtle hint? However, most reports also place release around March to April, which does seem a little far-fetched given the total lack of concrete info around at the moment, a mere month before, although this would be a great time for a launch since SONY’s super hyped PLAYSTATION3 is launched in PAL regions on March 23rd. We shall see.

If you’re reading this, the chances are you know of the Halo series, and if you’ve ever played the second, Halo 2, online, the chances are you also know all about smack talking. While laughing at your mates for blowing themselves up or congratulating yourself on a snap head-shot is all part of the fun of Multi-Player gaming, some people do take it too far. Comments about people’s mothers, race, nationality and sexuality can start to grate after a while and Bungie knows it. Fortunately, they’ve decided to do something about. In the hugely anticipated Halo 3, players may use the aptly named A-Hole button to mute the morons that unfortunately infest online gaming. By simply accessing the Statistics Menu, via the Xbox360 Controller’s Back Button, and setting the offending player to Electronic Theatre Imagesilent, serious gamers are spared the indignity of listening to their drivel. The culprit can continue to smack talk to his hearts content, but the resulting idiocy won’t be heard by the victim. We’re not sure how this will work in team-based Multi-Player, but it still sounds good to us.

Other than the realignment of Capcom's second Xbox360 offering atop the Multi-Format Sales Chart, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition retaking taking pole-position, it's been a pretty poor week for Xbox360 news. Hopefully the rumour mill will have churned out a better selection next week, perhaps even, with some fact to back-it-up.
