E3 2008:

NintendoDS: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

The biggest surprise of the show for NintendoDS fans certainly, perhaps even the biggest surprise of E3 2008 altogether. Grand Theft Auto is heading to the NintendoDS, in an exclusive release titled Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

Although details are scarce currently, Electronic Theatre can confirm that the title is being developed by RockStar Leeds, the same team who developed Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories for the PlayStation Portable. “This is a game that will deliver a rich, fast-paced and intense Grand Theft Auto experience that will be truly unique to Nintendo’s handheld platform,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “Rockstar Leeds, along with the team at Rockstar North, has built upon a decade of progressive design on Grand Theft Auto, and has created something fundamentally fresh and immersive.”

The title reportedly will retain the open-world design the series has become synonymous with, and will not only utilise the Touch Screen, but will also include online play – a feature that was strikingly absent from the series’ PlayStation Portable outings.

Due for release in December this year, those responsible are remaining tight-lipped about the plot. “An epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate” read the Press Release and, for now at least, that’s all we’ve got to go on.
