E3 2008:

PLAYSTATION3: BAJA: Edge of Control

“From the core founding members of the MX vs. ATV franchise comes the ultimate off-road raving experience: BAJA: Edge of Control. Conquer the Electronic Theatre Imagetoughest terrain Mother Nature has to offer and build the ultimate off-road vehicle in the most realistic, edge-of-control Racing game ever created.”

For a sport that receives very little attention from the public-at-large, the game promises an awful lot to attract this very audience. Appearing in playable form at this year’s E3 show, Electronic Theatre can now bring you the latest on THQ’s Autumn off-road Racer.

As with Colin McRae DiRT, BAJA: Edge of Control features Hill Climb events. However, the pleasant drift up a mountain side witnessed in Codemasters groundbreaking title isn’t what’s offered here; brutal twists and turns on a track with a great appreciation for the vertical, and Artificial Intelligence intent of showing you the rules of the road.

The title features a vehicle reset option, but will cost you Points. BAJA: Edge of Control has an in-game Scoring System which rewards the player for racing quick and clean. A big part of the racing technique in BAJA: Edge of Control is to learn the accurate use of the clutch. While gear shifting can be automatic and handbrake functions as expected, learning to hold clutch around narrow bends will allow for a short burst of acceleration when exiting the corner.

Damage in visible on-screen, and a Repair Chopper can be called-in at any point, requiring a short drive off-track before you’re back in the race. While BAJA: Edge of Control reportedly features more than one-thousand square miles of terrain, the title doesn’t allow you to find your own routes as in Test Drive: Unlimited and BurnOut: Paradise.

BAJA: Edge of Control looks nice, with crisp vehicles and detailed scenery. No noticeable slowdown exists; however, some of the effects are still being tweaked, and so are presently absent. BAJA: Edge of Control may not be everyone’s cup-of-tea, but for those who get more thrills from MX Vs. ATV then Forza Motorsport 2, it’s certainly an intriguing proposition.
