E3 2008:

PLAYSTATION3: MotorStorm: Pacific Rift

The brutal off-road racing festival is back, with players once again descending on the wild and alternative MotorStorm Festival. However, this time the location has changed Electronic Theatre Imagedramatically, with players attempting to tackle the diversity and unpredictability of a remote Pacific island environment. Developed by Evolution Studios exclusively for PLAYSTATION3, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift revisits the intense Racing action introduced in last year’s MotorStorm, this time allowing players to navigate a radically different tropical environment chock full of lush jungle, towering peaks, and crystal-clear water.

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is looking on good form. Playable at this year’s E3 2008, Evolution Studios has clearly spent a lot of time addressing the issues players had with the first title. Selectable driver avatars can be unlocked and chosen from your HUB. While there, you’ll also be able to pick your favourite vehicles for each Class, lessening the gap between choosing to play and actually beginning a race. It’s been said that vehicle customisation of some sort is to be included, but wasn’t available and currently the developers remain very tight-lipped.

The Tracks are denser than in the previous title, and feature many more alternative routes – some of which are very well hidden. Split-Screen Multi-Player was also available and handles at a good pace. The detail does drop form that of the Single-Player, but how noticeable it’ll be in the final build remains to be seen.

Currently scheduled to ship before the end of the year with sixteen tracks on the disc, new Vehicle Classes – including Monster Trucks – and four-player Split-Screen, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift seems to plug all the holes left in the original. However, whether or not it turns-out to be anything more than a stop-gap for MotorStorm 2 will only be seen once the title releases, which is currently at an unspecified date.
