E3 2008:

PLAYSTATION3: Resistance 2

Resistance: Fall of Man was easily the gamers most anticipated title available on the PLAYSTATION3 at launch. Even now, over a year after it’s European release, the title Electronic Theatre Imageremains one of the systems best-sellers. And so, unsurprisingly, Insomniac have been hard at work developing a sequel, Resistance 2.

Picking-up were the first game left-of, Nathan Hale is picked-up by a Black Ops unit and is taken to Iceland for research and testing. Resistance 2 immediately has one-up on its predecessor in terms of marketability; utilising Cut-Scenes as opposed to stylised stills.

Resistance 2 wasn’t playable at the show, but brief walkthrough demonstrations with the developers were available to those who know how. The title begins in Iceland, but then quickly skips forward two years, to a San Francisco devastated by war, and lying in ruin. A Level featuring in-game action was also shown, set in Chicago. Joined by an allied squad, you are tasked with fighting your way through downtown streets, and encountering Grims. Grims are Chimera with a difference. Unequipped, they come in huge numbers and charge directly at you, strikingly reminiscent of your first encounters with the Flood in the Halo series. Each member of your squad carries different weaponry, and act very intelligently, genuinely helping the players’ progression. The scene seen at SONY Pre-E3 Press Conference was also shown, featuring the giant Leviathan.

The gameplay seen, although brief, demonstrates great variety in the order of play. Tight corridor shooting and large-scale battles are included, and hopefully the pacing of the title will be substantially improved over it’s predecessor. Resistance 2 is due for release in November, and it’s clear that, until then, Insomniac will be playing their cards very close to their chest.
