E3 2008:

PLAYSTATION3: Soul Calibur IV

With Soul Calibur IV only weeks away from release in Europe, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this year’s E3 outing revealed little information. Mainly, because you’d be right.

Other than announcing the Electronic Theatre Imagefact that the title had gone Gold for the Xbox360 and PLAYSTATION3, the build on show was impressive. Tidier than that seen previously, and without the frame-rate issues, it was apparently representative of the final build bar a few effects, and looks simply stunning.

As you may or may not know, each of the Xbox360 and PLAYSTATION3 releases have their own exclusive Star Wars character featured within; Yoda on the Xbox360, and Darth Vader on the PLAYSTATION3, as well as Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice featured in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. A Character Creation System is also present, as debuted in Soul Calibur III. Players begin simply, choosing gender and more basic attributes, before the software auto-generates a representative avatar for you. You the have the option to adapt this Character Model’s physique, hair style, skin colour, facial type, etc., before customising their Armour Set and weaponry. The foundation of your character can be any of fighters included on disc, aside from those associated with Star Wars, and the players chosen variations can dramatically alter the fighting style of any given character.

The other big new addition to the series coming with number four is that of Critical Finish moves. The special attacks can only be performed under the conditions that you first manage to destroy a piece of your opponents armour, and then empty their Soul Gauge. Knocking them back once again and pressing all four Face Buttons executes the one-hit finisher move. Each character’s Critical Finish is different, and feature the two fighters being teleported to a different arena and a rather dramatic sequence ensuing.

Soul Calibur IV is due to arrive on European shop shelves on August 1st, 2008, and while we’ve got plenty more to tell you about the game, we’ll save it for our forthcoming In-depth Review.
