E3 2008:

PLAYSTATION3: Stormrise

Real-Time Strategy titles don’t have a particular good reputation on consoles. Despite variably enjoyable efforts on behalf of EA with Lord of the Rings: Battle for MiddleEarth II, Electronic Theatre ImageCommand & Conquer 3 and Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath, many publications spell doom before fortune when talking of the genre to those who prefer the Control Pad to a Mouse and Keyboard.

Ensemble Studios have Halo Wars launching later this year, and while Xbox360 fans may overlook Stormrise somewhat due to this fact, PLAYSTATION3 fans will have little trouble in deciding which Real-Time Strategy title their hopes rest upon. As reported by Electronic Theatre back at the beginning of July, Stormrise will be published by SEGA on behalf of The Creative Assembly – the developer responsible for the Total War series on PC, as well Spartan: Total Warrior and Viking: Battle For Asgard on consoles.

The game’s events unfold in a post-apocalyptic future in which two warring races are fighting for supreme control: the Echelon with their advanced technology, and the more organic Sai. Still very early in production, the Unique Selling Point of Stormrise is that of its “line-of-sight” Camera. When in command of a unit, the Camera will automatically zoom to that unit’s line-of-sight, opening up some new tactical ground. Further to this, battles will take place on a fully 3D Map – which includes scaling buildings and underground passes.

The Control System inElectronic Theatre Image Stormrise is emphasised to be on the simple side of Real-Time Strategy titles. Apparently, around ninety percent of the game’s commands can be issued with just the two Analogue Sticks and one Face Button.

Stormrise is not due for release until a very vague “2009”, but already it’s looking promising. Eight-player online is promised, as well as Co-Operative play both online and offline, and the Single-Player is suggested to be at around twelve hours. Due for release on PLAYSTATION3, Xbox360 and PC, Stormrise is certainly one to watch.
