Due on August 25th in the US, Mario Super
Sluggers may well have been the only First-Party Wii title on
show at this years E3 to hold the attention of Nintendo’s hardcore
gaming fanbase.
Playable on the show floor, Mario Super Sluggers
follows in the vein of Mario Strikers Charged. Tooling the
player with an array of Special Moves and bizarre arenas, the title
can be played exclusively with a Wii Remote, almost as an update to
the baseball Mini-Game featured in
Wii Sports. As has been
predicted by
Electronic Theatre for some time now, it seems that Nintendo
have chosen the Mario franchise as the ideal vehicle to
flesh-out the activities available in Wii Sports into
full-blown releases, and we predict more will be on the way.
However, the option to add a Nunchuk is present, although wasn’t
available in the demo.
Before beginning each Match the player must first select
a Team Captain, followed by the rest of the line-up. Mii’s can also
be added to the long list of Nintendo favourites.
Batting is performed simply by swinging the Wii Remote –
as in Wii Sports – respectively of how this would be done in
real life. Lighting waving the Wii
Remote before the pitch will add
a small amount of power when striking the ball. Again, as with
Wii Sports, timing is the key to landing a successful return.
Running the Bases requires the player to shake the Wii Remote from
side-to-side.
Pitching uses the same basic principle. Winding-up a
pitch and throwing is executed exactly as you would expect, with the
A and B Buttons adding modifiers to the throw. Pressing both the A
and B Buttons together executes the character’s unique pitch, which
distract the batting team when making their play.
Mario Super Sluggers does not yet have a European
release date, however, with its’ inclusion on Nintendo’s own UK
website following E3, you can bet it’ll be arriving in time for
Christmas. |
