E3 2008:

Xbox360

It was Microsoft who kicked-off E3 2008, and so they did with a bang. With big announcements coming from the start of their Press Conference right to the very end, onlookers on Electronic Theatre Imagebehalf of Nintendo and SONY would have no doubt reported what a hard act it would be to follow.

Firstly; the games. Of course, big-hitters Gears of War 2, Halo Wars, FallOut 3, The Last Remnant, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Fable II, Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise, and Resident Evil 5 were all present and correct, and new additions to Microsoft’s “casual” line-up included You’re in the Movies, Lips, 1 Vs. 100 and Scene It? Box Office Smash were announced. Two big surprises joined the line-up, the one-time PLAYSTATION3 exclusive Final Fantasy XIII slides it’s way across to the Xbox360, as predicted by Electronic Articles back at it’s E3 2006 PLAYSTATION3 unveiling, and RARE’s Banjo-Kazooie, originally published by none-other-than Nintendo, will be sliding it’s way onto the XboxLIVE! Arcade.

The Xbox360 Dashboard is set to receive some major modifications. The Blade System used currently is going to be replaced completely, and customised 3D Avatars – similar to that of Wii’s Mii System – will replace GamerPics. Although details aren’t quite as solid, the new system seems to reflect SONY’s Home quite closely in many aspects, as well as online social networks such as MySpace and Facebook.

XboxLIVE! Primetime and a deal of Netflix will, finally, see the Xbox360 achieving the gaol of a true home multi-media machine. Handling hundreds of television programmes from networks such as NBC Universal, Sci-Fi Channel and MGM, as well as a much more complete film catalogue than presently offered for those who subscribe to Netflix, the Xbox360 is positioned well – if a little later than promised – to dominate the home digital distribution market for television and film.
