Electronic Articles Special: PLAYSTATION3 Monthly Report

As you are probably aware, the PLAYSTATION3 saw a pretty rocky launch back in April last year. However, with news travelling fast late last year that the 60GB was to be discontinued Electronic Theatre Imageand that only a 40GB was to replace it – a model that featured severely restricted multimedia applications by comparison - and an early revival for the console began and retailers across the country. At this point in time the official sales figures show that over 8 Million units have been sold, which is quite reasonable, but still far from a comparison to the Xbox360 or Wii.

With more people owning a PLAYSTATION3 console, Electronic Articles has commissioned me a regular monthly slot with which to update you as to what new games are out, what the rumour mill is saying, what new updates do and generally what new technology that is available for the system.

First things first; download the latest update so that you have all the extras added since launch. Camera features, Folding@Home and a few other features are included. Even before you play (well maybe a quick go) you need to customise your theme. From the PLAYSTATION Store you are able to go directly to Themes and choose from several different looks. They only take around 20 seconds to save to the PLAYSTATION3 but are well worth it. They are a little limited at the moment so if there is nothing that takes your fancy there then type into a search engine ‘PLAYSTATION3 Themes’ and you will find lots of results. There really are some great ones on there – The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, American Dad, Star Wars, you can even make the PLAYSTATION3 look like it is running Windows Vista. One that stuck in my mind was a picture of the ‘circle of death’ with the slogan saying “Only on Xbox360”!

Once you are all up-to-date and looking sexy you need toElectronic Theatre Image find out which games you want to play. Either go to Electronic Articles, as any reasonable gamers knows, or go to the PLAYSTATION Store’s demos section and begin downloading from there. Just a word of warning – demos can take a long time to download. Perform the download in the background freeing-up time to play one of the first-generation titles you probably got with the console. Some of the top demos at the moment are Burnout Paradise, The Club, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men and Uncharted: Drakes’ Fortune. They are all free to download so are a must have for any PLAYSTATION3 fan that is online. You are also able to download full games from the PLAYSTATION Store. Games are split into sections so that you can either download ‘Classic’ games, Arcade or New full titles; of which Lemmings and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection have received the most awareness. Of course you do not get the nice friendly service that the Electronic Theatre staff offer or the vast range of games!

Well that has briefly covered a lot of the activity surrounding the PLAYSTATION3 from launch up to current date. Next article will look a bit more in-depth at, what I believe, are the best games available at this point in time. I shall also be looking into the launch of Home, the virtual world SONY will be offering people that is said to rival the online phenomenon Second Life, and, of course, new games that will be coming out over the following month, including Grand Theft Auto IV.

Good luck customising your Themes, downloading games and have a great months gaming!
