PSP Sequels Coming

SONY is currently undergoing development on the sequels for two of the PlayStation Portable’s most celebrated titles, with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu providing first details on LocoRoco 2 and Patapon 2.

LocoRoco 2 is the first direct sequel in the series following the 2006 original. The PLAYSTATION3 release was an offshoot, explained designer Tsutomu Kouno to the magazine. The title will focus once again on the invading Moja aliens, who've returned with a new boss and with a new ability: singing. The Moja use their singing to suck the life out of the world, and it's up to the LocoRoco to bring that life back.

Expect a similar look and play experience to the original game, complete with the same control setup that makes use of the L Trigger and R Trigger, and Circle Button. There are some updates that should keep those who played out the original coming back, though. The LocoRoco can now swim and perform other new actions. You'll also find Mini-Games midway through stages.

Like LocoRoco 2, Patapon 2 is suggested to retain quite a bit from its predecessor. The focus for the new Patapon game, however, will be Multi-Player, according to comments made by designer Hiroyuki Kotani in the magazine. Four players will be able to get in on the action this time around for Co-Operative Ad-Hoc play as players team-up to guide an Egg to the Level Goal. Outside of this, the title will feature a full Single-Player Campaign that is set to feature entirely new Patapon characters.

Patapon 2 is due out for Japanese release this winter. LocoRoco 2 is currently without a release date, but is listed by Famitsu as being further along in development than the Patapon sequel. This suggests that both games will arrive this year, which makes them likely candidates for a full E3 unveil next week.
