It’s been reported today that Sony are having difficulty making million sellers out of their first-party PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) releases in North America. Since the PS3’s North American launch in late November 2006, only Insomniac’s launch title Resistance: Fall of Man has managed to surpass one million unit sales in the territory.
According to a new report on GameSetWatch, while many titles have sold over five hundred thousand units, the only other Sony published release on the system to come close to it’s first million is Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet, currently having surpassed seven hundred and fifty thousands unit sales. Titles yet to reach the half a million mark include MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank. Although it would be hard to deny many other Sony releases the honour of being noted as successful, the figures begin to take more shape when in comparison to rival systems. Gears of War surpassed it’s first million units sales within a month of release at a time when the Xbox 360’s userbase was considerably lower than the PS3 currently boasts in the territory. Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy reportedly surpassed five hundred thousand unit sales in it’s first week of release in North America.
It should be noted that these sales numbers, which are based on NPD stats, do not include games sold as part of hardware bundles, but this also applies to our comparison titles above. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated on the PS3’s market placement.
