Mafia II will be with us later this Summer, and as a sequel to an eight year old game, it has a lot of new ground to cover. The original Mafia was well received, with critics suggesting that the more serious approach to open-world crime drama added depth that the Grand Theft Auto games of the time were lacking. Since then however, free-roaming titles have greatly diversified, with the likes of Just Cause 2, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Saints Row 2, Crackdown and of course a new home console entry in the aforementioned Rockstar Games series having proven that open-world action videogames are capable of much more than simply driving and shooting, even if that remains the player’s principle engagement.
