Electronic Theatre first previewed Darksiders at last year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and was impressed by its flair and depth, even then. Nearly a year on, we are left in no doubt that the new development from THQ is going to be a hit. Due for release on January 1st, 2010 on PLAYSTATION 3 and Xbox 360, Electronic Theatre brings you more details from E3 2009 to whet your appetite.
The demo shown began in an area called Ashlands. Players assume the role of War, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. In a game that is mostly exploration and only part combat there is much to investigate and health, treasure and bonus life points to be found. Combat junkies will however not be disappointed as what combat there is is fast and brutal, with a number of combination moves and no shortage of gore. After defeating a small number of enemies the focus shifted to an arena fight where War must defeat an enemy and snatch his trusty steed for the game, Ruin. War fells the enemy with a number of combos followed by a swift slash to the knees, employed by pressing the B Button on the Xbox 360 controller. The finally sequence of the demo involves War mounting Ruin and entering newly available areas of the game including a desert in which War battles a giant scorpion. With a press of the RB Button Ruin races faster away from the scorpion, allowing War to stay out of harms way until the Scorpions mouth is open and vulnerable to attack.
War’s main weapon is a large broadsword swift at carving up enemies, however it is also possible to melee, shoot a gun and perform dodges and rolls whilst locked on to an enemy. Combat is gruesome and bloodthirsty. Out in open HUB worlds, players can collect souls from their victims and exchange them for new powers and items. Special abilities can be levelled-up and for that extra ego boost players can initiate a sequence in which War transforms into a gigantic demon in order to reap havoc on doomed enemies.
With an exploration aspect similar to Crackdown and gruesomeness comparable to God of War, Electronic Theatre believes THQ have found the perfect match to please adventure-hungry Hardcore Gamers. Electronic Theatre will keep you posted on any further developments as they happen.
